WHAT IS COLLEGEN AND WHAT DOES IT DO?

What is Collagen?

Collagen is an essential protein for the structure of our body. (Kim vd., 2001; Uitto vd., 1989).

Collagen is an important protein that forms about 25% of the proteins in our body and generates %75 of our skin.

What Are the Benefits of Collagen?

• Increases collagen content and antioxidant enzyme activities and helps to improve skin's appearance and structure.(1)

• Helps to prevent skin aging.(2)

• By reducing hair loss provides shiny and lively look. (1)

Many benefits of collagen have been proven by scientific researches. For more information, we recommend you to take advantage of scientific research on the benefits of Collagen.

What are the Types of Collagen?

There are 19 different types of collagen defined in the human body. In the below table you can see the tissues which collagen takes a part in our body.

Type of Collagen

Part in the Tissue

I

Skin, Teeth, bones, tendons, cornea

II

Cartilage

III

Skin, tendons, blood vessels, Uterine wall

IV

Eyepiece, basal layer of the skin

V

Cornea, intercellular tissue

VI

Connective tissue

VII

Basal layer of the skin, cornea, sclera

VIII

Cartilage and sclera component

IX

Cartilage component

X

Cartilage component

XI

Cartilage component

XII

Tendon component

XIII

Endothelial tissues

XIV

Prenatal skin  and tendons

Adult human skin has 80% of type I collagen , 15% of  type III collagen, 5% of type IV and V. Collagen type III, also known as the reconstruction collagen, takes more part in young people skins. (Chaudhuri vd., 2000).

Why the collagen amount decreases in the body?

Collagen synthesis decreases in body from the mid-20s due to nutritional deficiencies, smoking and alcohol, aging, low oxygen in the body, sun and other external factors.(3)

As a result of collagen loss, the skin loses its elasticity, brightness and softness.  Sagging, wrinkles and color changes occurs in the skin..(3)

The reasons for Collagen decreasing in the body;

  • Aging process
  • Continuous sun exposure (Harmful UV rays)
  • Smoke of Cigarette
  • Natural and environmental factors

Why Hydrolyzed Collagen?

Nowadays, collagen production of the body decreases  due to the decrease in nutritive value and the change of our eating habits. Also in older ages collagen production of the body decreases regularly. In line with the studies, it has been determined that hydrolyzed collagen increases the amount of collagen in the body. (The Use of Collagen Hydrolyzate as a Functional Ingredient in the Food Industry, Seda Ersus Bilek , Sibel Kaya Bayram)

For more comprehensive information on the benefits of collagen, we recommend you  to take advantage of scientific research. If you have any health problems or regularly used medications, it is recommended to use herbal products in consultation with healthcare professionals.
